At the Table

I love this photograph by Danish photographer, Ditte Isager, and his unique perspective on family life. What a fresh way to capture an everyday moment. (And the sweet, little hand reaching out is icing on the cake!)

Here’s hoping your weekend is full of table time with your loved ones. Cheers!

Twelve Years Via Time Lapse Video

Filmmaker Frans Hofmeester has spent the last twelve years filming his daughter, and now has a 2 minute, 45 second video representing footage from over 600 weeks to show for it. Wow! To be honest, these types of projects are bittersweet for me… on one hand I love the fact that there are others out there as obsessed with documenting things as me. But on the other hand, it makes me kick myself for not thinking of this years ago, at the start of my own adventure in parenting. Unfortunately, there is no pressing the rewind button on something like this.

So darn you, Frans Hofmeester, for being so creative, so obsessive, so timely, and so dedicated. And for not sending out a memo to the rest of us twelve years ago!

The Monster Engine

The Monster Engine is a book, demonstration, lecture and gallery exhibition created by Dave Devries. It all started back in 1998 when Devries had the single question: What would a child’s drawing look like if it were painted realistically? Devires, a painter for the likes of Marvel and DC comics, took an interest in his niece’s doodles, which often filled his sketchbooks.

In the online article, Killing Creativity: Why Kids Draw Pictures of Monsters & Adults Don’t, Sam McNerney writes how many adults lose their sense of creativity, which seems to occur naturally and in abundance as children. Picasso said it first: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

McNerney writes, “In many ways, children flourish where adults fail. Children are more creative and are natural inventors. Their worldview is incomplete and demands discovery. They prosper because they embrace their ignorance instead of ignoring it. And they are willing to explore, investigate and put their ideas to the test because they are willing to fail. Unlike adults, they don’t care how other people perceive or evaluate their ideas, and they’re unconcerned with the impossible or what doesn’t work.”

Interesting food for thought here, and a compelling argument for how we can learn from the next generation.

Getting in the Spirit of Mother’s Day

Here’s a lovely video that will really pull at your heart strings (especially if you’re a parent AND a fan of the Olympics). Since we’re just a few weeks away from Mother’s Day and a few months out from the Summer Olympics, the universal story of raising children and raising athletes couldn’t be more timely.

The Procter & Gamble commercial honors everything that all moms do to help their children succeed by showcasing the amazing moms behind Olympic athletes at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The hardest job in the world is truly the best job in the world.

Grab a tissue, friends!

Funny Things We Say to Our Kids

Ever say something to your kids and then think about how funny or strange it may sound out of context? Nathan Ripperger has, and thankfully, he was inspired to turn his words into art.

Many of us record funny things our kids say when they’re young, but this is from the opposite perspective — the parents. And I love the idea of turning words into art and ultimately, family heirlooms. These would also be a great gift project for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. Or even the extended family.

In Nathan’s words: “This is a collection of posters featuring phrases that have left my mouth only because of my children.” These are FABULOUS!

Fun with Duck Tape

Recently I wrote about a local museum craft class in which kids and parents created critters out of balled up newspaper and colored masking tape. Since then, I’ve been on the hunt for our own collection of colored masking tape; however, I’ve been unable to find any that truly stick well on three dimensional shapes.

But then Livi and I found our solution in Duck Tape, which comes in all kinds of vibrant colors and fun patterns. I was a little hesitant at first because I wasn’t sure if Livi would be able to tear it and cut it, since Duct tape is quite sticky and durable. But we tried it with great success! And boy, does it stick! We also love the bright colors! Look for it at Michaels or your local craft store.

p.s. I just discovered Duck Brand’s Duct Tape Sheets on their website. These permanent adhesive sheets would be a great addition to craft projects!
