Thanksgiving Centerpieces

Thanksgiving is now less than two weeks away! If you’re hosting for the holiday, then the menu is probably at the top of your to-do list. But before the hustle and bustle in the kitchen starts, now is a good time to think about what kind of a centerpiece will set the stage for your beautiful meal. Consider going all natural with your vases by using squashes and pumpkins. For large varieties, cut a hole near the top with a mini saw and insert a container to hold water. Or use a votive candle holder for smaller ones. You may need to trim a little off the base so it sits flat.

Word Streamers

These word streamers would certainly require some planning and patience in making but I love the end result! Great for a back-to-school party or any event that inspires a special message. Happy weekend!

Ribbon Tent

‘Tis the season for camping and outdoor celebrations so check out this tent-inspired ribbon room. It sure looks inviting whether it shelters formal place settings or an informal picnic on a blanket. It’s all about location with this particular version… you’ll need a tree with a horizontal limb as well as two long limbs on the ground to anchor the streamers. And don’t forget the crepe paper!

Customized Party Cups

We just had our annual summer birthday bash a few weeks ago so I still recall all the half full cups we found scattered about the house and yard. Every year I swear I’ll put a marker out next to the stack of cups and then the intention gets away from me.

But this creative solution from Martha Stewart takes things to another level! Put out a few crafty items like markers, paints, tape and stickers and who knows what might appear on the old white paper cup. Surely guests will be more inclined to keep track of their small yet delightful works of art?

Got a crowd that’s not feeling artsy? Then these are your solution from Fred. Choose from Pick Your Nose People or Party Animals. These are sure to get the conversation going!

Half Birthday

Want to really surprise someone on their birthday? Then celebrate a half birthday with them! This is also a fun idea for a kid that has a summer birthday and doesn’t get to celebrate with classmates, or for the kid that has a winter birthday and never gets to have the outdoor summer party. And here’s the perfect card to go with a half cake:

Music Themed Birthday Party

I’ve posted about my friend Jackie’s birthday parties before; well, here is her latest creative masterpiece: her daughter’s second birthday. Jackie starts her party planning months in advance and truly relishes building out a theme and executing all the details with passion and creativity. This party, of course, was no different. In fact, she seemed to take the term, “labor of love” to an entirely new level. What she does with an oven and a sewing machine I can only dream of (or hire out for!) The pictures and Jackie’s blog post highlight her process and every telling and beautiful detail. Kudos once again, Jackie!

p.s. Don’t miss the popcorn bar bowls created by melting old records in the oven!

Number Shaped Envelope Surprise

Oh Happy Day has no shortage of fabulous ideas for celebrating all of life’s joyous events. I’ve posted before about Jordan’s countdown envelope surprise but this takes things a step further. After asking everyone to email a note or memory and photos, you put them in envelopes and surprise the person. It works great for a birthday or anniversary since you can put the envelopes in the shape of the birthday or anniversary year. No matter which one you’re celebrating, here’s to many more years!

Your Party Closet

In case you haven’t run into her in blogging circles, Jordan Ferney is the queen of party planning. Not only is she great at finding all things cool; she is also super crafty and creative. Today on Oh Happy Day, she describes what it takes to maintain a healthy and inspiring cache of party supplies. I love how she describes in thorough detail all of her party essentials. It reads like a recipe of ingredients or a D.I.Y. guide to spring cleaning, but let’s face it, party planning is much more appealing!

I especially love her tip about buying napkins and other things that are constantly changing in style when you see them, instead of waiting for an actual event. Otherwise, a particular print or pattern may no longer be around when you need it (think of how quickly Target moves out its merchandise). Don’t have enough of one style? Mixing up styles can solve that challenge and be quite eye catching to boot. And we’ve all known the feeling of running around last minute trying to find the missing piece to a party theme’s decor which can be avoided with a little planning. Lastly, when the urge occurs to host an impromptu party, you’ll be ready!

Ice Luminaries

It’s mid February…the good news is it’s staying light just a little longer each night. The bad news? There are still some cold, dark nights ahead of us. I’ll be honest: I’m not sure I will get around to making these awesome ice luminaries, but I love looking at them. I never cease to be amazed by the things people come up with! Enjoy the tour on making these at Design Mom and have fun thinking about new ways in which to light up your February nights!
