Kid Cake!

The next time you’re sweating over cake decorating for your kids, remember this awesome strategy: Why not let the birthday boy or girl do it? That was the brilliant thinking behind one mom’s fantastic doodle cake. What might be even better than eating your own cake? For some creative kids, it might just be decorating it!

You can find the AmeriColor Food Colour Markers here and more on Rosie’s fabulous cake on her Sweetapolita blog.

I Am Eleven

In 2005 Genevieve Bailey set off to interview 11-year-olds across the globe about their views on the world, politics and their hope for the future. What started as a documentary became a labor of love spanning seven years and multiple countries. The film has won numerous awards including Best Documentary at the IF Awards and Outstanding Documentary at the Newport Beach Film Festival, and has been playing to audiences in Australia since July.

You can read more in an interview with the filmmaker here, on Cool Hunting.

Bug Bash: Happy Bee-day!

This past weekend we celebrated our June bug, who turned eight! As always, the fun began at the address sign and down the driveway…

By the time guests reached the party, they were in the proper frame of mind.

I think this was my favorite part! Remember those fly papers from when you were a kid? I haven’t seen them lately, but I remember them growing up. Party guests didn’t mind running into these, which consisted of fruit roll-ups and gummy flies.

A side note here: prepping for these parties ALWAYS goes down to the wire. After several years of this, my brother and sister-in-law know the routine, and always show up a few minutes early to rescue me and work through any last minute dilemmas, which very often end up being the coolest part of the party. A few years ago for our dinosaur party, they rigged a volcano watering hole (caldera cooler), using a fogger machine, lava rock and a punch bowl. I’ll never forget it. This year, I had wanted to hang the fly papers, but was coming up short on ideas and time. When I told my partners in crime to just throw them on a tray they went above and beyond… just like always. Thanks, guys! I’ve said it before: It takes a village!

Another “happy accident”: There’s nothing like having a softball tournament to go to in the hours before throwing a party. This added more stress to the pre-party hours and when we got home, we had one hour before the party started. Usually, we’re running around the yard tying two dozen balloons here and there. This year, with the clock ticking, my husband opted for keeping the two bundles together and tying them to the lamp post. We ended up loving the impact of seeing them all together!

Above: a “specimen jar” of bugs that grow in water. Below: a few inflatables.

Appetizers included ants on a log…

walking sticks…

bug juice…

and fly tortillas, served on fly swatters.

And for the truly adventurous, REAL and EDIBLE bugs! Crickets, larvets, ants, grasshoppers and water bugs. Looking for something sweeter? How about a worm or scorpion sucker?!

For the main course, we grilled hot dogs and burgers, with waterbugmelon and baked larvae (beans) for sides.

As always, there was no shortage of desserts! Worms in dirt pudding cups…

bug cookies (thanks, Grandma!)…

a honeycomb hex cake from a Williams Sonoma mold…

and a beehive cake, made with a Nordic Ware mold (thanks, Gaga, for another awesome year of cakes!)

We took bug portraits of all the kids in these super cool bug glasses by Insect Lore. There are three styles: mantis, fire ant and hornet.

We also played five games:

First Birthday: Year in Review

The big birthday bash on Saturday went off without a hitch! I’m still working on tomorrow’s post, which will recap the festivities. In the meantime, here’s a blast from the past… the first birthday. The garden party theme included a lovely cake as well as a snapshot retrospective of the first year. Images were printed in color then mounted and trimmed to foam core.

It’s a nice approach for the first birthday, since there are so many developmental milestones, but this would work great for any birthday, or even a graduation or anniversary.

Funny, I just noticed the bees on the cake, which also appeared on this year’s cake. Tomorrow, we come full circle!

Today’s post takes us to Dinotopia, and the birthday before time!

The invite:

I knew something was different the night before the party. I sensed something lurking in the shadows which sent me straight to bed.

With the dawn of a new day, my worst fears were realized: dinosaurs! (FYI: if you have a dinosaur party, you may encounter some unexpected guests, including dinosaurs.)

They… were… everywhere.

Luckily, I was prepared with a menu that tantalized both plant eaters and meat eaters.

As well as the sweet-toothed!

Some caldera coolers took the edge off of the gathering of mixed species.

Dino dig time.

The archaeologists proudly show off their loot.

Birthday of Champions: The Olympics Party

Today’s post: an Olympic birthday party, just in time for the summer games in London!

Tickets were hard to come by for the prestigious event.

One last quiet moment before the gates are opened.

The playing field is ready.

Let’s make some noise!

Awaiting the start whistle for the obstacle course.

Tunnel vision at work.

Early in the race and already tired.

Remember American Gladiator?

Sibling rivalry played out at the tug-o-war. One competitor perfects his zen strategy.

Another gold medal performance in cake design by one of the grandmas.

At the concessions stand:

Fruits of labor.

No swimming after eating but body bopping is encouraged.

And the grand finale… the silly string wars: athletes vs. uncle, who scores a 10 from judges for artistic expression.

But he proves to be no match for the raw talent and shooting accuracy of the athletes, fueled by endorphins and sugar. There’s also strength in numbers and a strong will to see things through to the finish.

Time for the ref to step in and call the fight.

Olivia Trivia: can it really be version 6.0?

It’s Birthday Party Week!

It’s a big week in our household… the countdown is on for Livi’s annual birthday bash, scheduled for next weekend. This year’s theme? Bug Bash!

Stay tuned for plenty of post party pics next week, but in the meantime, I’ll be posting past years’ themes this week as well as some posts which might come in handy for any summer birthdays you may be celebrating.

Here’s a quick, cool way to celebrate the milestones that happen with each passing year, courtesy of a friend of mine, Jackie Barnes.

And check out this outrageously-detailed, gorgeous cake! (You can read more about it by clicking on the Cute as a Button link below.)
