Happy Fourth!

We’re excited for the annual parade on our street that culminates in a block party at the cul-de-sac. Traditions like these really remind us how quickly time flies, things change and kids grow up. It’s hard to believe that we started this tradition nine years ago, holding our one month old daughter. We have pictures of her at the same event, getting bigger with each passing year. A couple years ago, a new addition was added to the mix — cousin Aidan (seen below). And now this year, a brand new cousin and a new addition at our household, Cooper, an 11 week old Golden Retriever. We can’t wait to see how he’ll react to the water spray off the fire truck and all the kids and treats. It will surely add a new dimension to the event. And that’s the great thing about traditions — they, just like our kids, continue to grow bigger as the years go by.

Have a safe and memorable weekend!

Red, White and Blue(berry)

Still looking for a patriotic dessert for tomorrow’s holiday? Check out these colorful sweets from Lil Sugar.

Happy 4th of July!

Friday, July 8th, 2011

from Kate

We’re still full from the Fourth, so our cookbook travels will continue next week! Why so full?

There’s nothing like an afternoon by the pool letting your cravings take over…
Moretti Beer and Sangria made with Prosecco
Vienna Hotdogs and Bratwurst (You can fly them in!)
Farro Salad from Tavern
Chips and Onion Dip
Not shown: Watermelon and Tavern Cookies for dessert (They didn’t make it to be photographed!)

Followed by an evening of the works — our neighbor’s famous ribs and the fire kind. Oh, and the berry dessert? A summer fruit crisp made with strawberries, peaches and nectarines.

And now…the diet begins for next year!

Get Your Red, White and Blue On

We saw this bike decorated courtesy of the folks at Martha Stewart and memories of neighborhood celebrations and good old-fashioned bike parades came flooding back. There is no better holiday for celebrating summer with your friends and family than the fourth of July. Whether your day includes dressing up, watching a parade, eating hot dogs and ice cream, having a watermelon seed spitting contest or a water balloon fight, enjoying a bottle of Rosé and barbequed ribs, swimming, spending the day at the beach — or above all watching fireworks — we hope it’s a day to remember!

A Berry Tasty Tradition

from Kate

The fourth of July is less than two weeks away (!) and it has always been a tradition in my family to serve a berry dessert. When I was growing up our patriotic sweet tooth craved my mother’s — and grandmother’s — famous homemade strawberry pie. I still keep the berry tradition, but I like to change up the recipe! I’m thinking blue or blackberries this year.

These desserts look especially delicious:
(1) Marilyn Batali’s Blackberry Pie — that’s Mario‘s Mom (recipe and photo courtesy of Food & Wine)
(2) Pavlova with Lemon Curd and Berries (recipe and photo courtesy of Gourmet)
(3) Blueberry Mini Tarts (recipe and photo courtesy of Martha Stewart)
(4) Blackberry Puffs (recipe and photo courtesy of Martha Stewart)

Or maybe I should just skip the oven altogether. I’ve saved this article from the Los Angeles Times in my recipe file, which got me thinking…What other outta-the-oven options might work?

(1) Mini Buttermilk Berry Milkshakes (recipe and photo courtesy of 101 Cookbooks)
(2) Mixed Berry and Cassis Sundaes (recipe and photo courtesy of Gourmet)
(3) Blueberry Pops (recipe and photo courtesy of Martha Stewart)

What do you think?
